Waterproofing Membranes – Types and Applications
There are many different types of waterproofing membranes, but the most common type is a layer of material that prevents water leakage or damage. The waterproofing membrane is generally performed or applied with liquid. Water can be prevented from penetrating them by adhering to or installing them around the foundations. Whether you intend to waterproof your building’s basement or roof, waterproofing will keep water out of your foundation and protect your structure from water damage. Waterproofing membrane is added to the concrete that will help make water ingress impenetrable as well as making it easy to maintain.
Waterproofing membranes generally consist of:
Liquid Applied Waterproofing Membranes and Sheet Based Waterproofing Membranes are two broad categories of waterproofing membranes.
Rolls of sheet membrane are available. Upon laying them on a firm surface, they unroll. The bituminous waterproofing membrane is one of the most common sheet-based membranes.
Liquid applied waterproofing membranes are the kind of membranes that come in the form of fluid that can be sprayed or brushed onto the surface to prevent water leaks.
The liquid forms a monolithic membrane with no laps, welds, or seams by spraying.
Available Waterproofing membrane systems in the market
Self-adhesive modified bituminous membrane
Modified bituminous membranes are composed of asphalt, polymers, tackifiers, and mineral stabilizers. Fibreglass, polyester, or a combination of the two can be used to reinforce the products. Mineral granules, coatings, films, or other opaque surfaces are commonly used on products designed to be exposed to the elements. A release film or paper protects the self-adhesive layer, removed during installation. Self-adhesive modified bituminous membranes are generally packaged and stored in cardboard boxes or covered with opaque wrapping.
Polymer-modified bitumen membrane
The most widespread materials for creating the waterproofing layer are the polymer-bitumen roll-fed sheet membranes. These materials could also be used as an underlay for pitched roofs and a vapour barrier. The material withstands temperature fluctuations and high mechanical loads providing long-term, reliable and effective waterproofing.
The polymer-modified bitumen sheet membrane provides additional flow resistance that makes it possible to use the material in a scorching climate. On the bottom side, the material is covered by a polymer film with particular graphic elements, the melting of which indicates the proper material heating. The material is covered by a polymer film as the essential component on the top side.
EPDM membrane
It is a preformed elastomeric waterproofing solution made of high-quality EPDM rubber. It exhibits high tensile strength, elongation, and tears strength and is resistant to weathering, heat ageing, ozone, UV rays, acids, alkalis and oxygenated solvents. The installation is quick and, more importantly, safe.
Modern products come as a single component cementitious, polymer-modified non-reactive selective fibre-reinforced repair mortar to provide excellent properties and resistance to corrosion and carbonation and shrinkage cracking. This can be applied in thickness from 10 mm to 40 mm vertically and 25 mm in an overhead situation. It is suitable to use by hand trowel or by a particular mortar spray machine.
